The following comments were submitted by survey participants:
“Bike lanes, education, and ENFORCEMENT are crucial – need enforcement!!!”
“Better biking on Santa Cruz would be an improvement.”
“I would love feeling safe for my child to bike to Hillview.”
“I do not see lot of benefit for a NS option, in particular if not suitable for children. The main issue is ECR itself. Being able to have a better E-W connection would help a lot.”
“I support any progress in providing safer biking especially for kids riding to school and to downtown in Menlo Park and Palo Alto.”
“We have very little business along El Camino. A bike lane down all of Santa Cruz would be more helpful.”
“We feel riding on Santa Cruz Ave is a bit dangerous due to the number of cars along that road.”
“Revising Coleman Ave should be the priority for the safety of children. It is an accident waiting to happen. The road is narrow, there are no sidewalks in parts and children from Laurel and MA frequent it.”
“We need to start building infrastructure for bikes/pedestrians…NOT cars. Way too car focused. YES over time, need more dense housing…walkable and bikeable communities.”
“We need to develop safer routes to our local schools.”
“I would vastly prefer having a bike-centric route through MP, similar to Bryant St in Palo Alto, than having bike lanes scattered about on different roads. Downtown areas are amenable to bike traffic because vehicle speeds are lower and drivers are more attentive. I am not really sure, even as a very experienced cyclist, if bicycles should be permitted on roads like El Camino or Alma St (Palo Alto). This of course takes long-term planning across administrations, and the cooperation of homeowners on the proposed routes.”
“This (the two options) is a false choice . It is disappointing to see this type of thinking. Would you like prefer surgery or recovery service? It’s a package deal!”
“I feel like this argument (more bike lanes) is designed to serve a small minority of people at the expense of the majority.”
“I reject your dichotomy here. We can and should do both. Adding bike lanes on El Camino would not make East-West bike lanes less likely.”
“This survey seems biased. I vote for any and all improvements to bike lanes. It should not be a choice.”
“My preferred option is to do NEITHER. As the saying goes, it it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
“Bike safety is my issue. Too many bikers turn without looking back. They have inadequate lighting at evening / early morning.”
“unless bikers are legally required to obey safety rules, we will be seeing tragic accidents. A bike is no match for even the smallest car or motorcycle.
“These roadways, especially Menlo Ave. and Santa Cruz have way too much traffic already.”
“While I support buffered bike lanes on ECR, I actually prefer a lane along the west side of the railroad tracks. Like PA’s bike path behind PAMF. We should be pushing for grade separations, undergrounding the train, maybe even ECR (I know it’s expensive but FastTrack could help pay.”
“How about removing parking from Santa Cruz altogether?”
“The commercial traffic on Santa Cruz, Menlo, and Oak Grove make them unsafe for bikers.”
“If Menlo Park could do one thing, I would want a bike tunnel under the tracks connecting Middle Ave to Burgess Drive.”
“Cyclists appear to have made themselves a special class exempt from traffic laws. I used to enjoy cycling, but no more.”
“I feel these explanations given (in the table) are obviously slanted in favor of one option rather than the other.”
