Problems & Potential Solutions
The Safeway Plaza, the most popular commercial destination in Menlo Park because of the 24-hour Safeway, is currently difficult for bicyclists to access.
- There are no bike lanes on the narrow section of Middle Avenue near which is shared with a steady stream of entering, exiting and passing vehicles. Motorists are so pre-occupied with monitoring merging and crossing vehicles that bicyclists are virtually invisible. Solution: install a two-way protected bike lane on the south side of Middle between University and a new light-controlled, Middle bike crossing near Peet’s. This will enable bicyclists to safely cross Middle and the plaza parking lot.
