The following comments were submitted by survey participants:
“These areas are popular school commute routes. It would be great to have designated, protected bike lanes for these areas.”
“Great idea. El Camino is the “Great Divide” that worries many parents of young riders. Anything to make it safer would be a welcomed change.”
“I support protected ways of crossing El Camino for cyclists (bike bridge, tunnel) but not removing parking spaces.”
“Biking to the library would be so much nicer this way!”
“These would improve current bike routes to school and downtown.”
“I think this path would be used by many more kids/people.(than ECR) especially Hillview students.”
“I MUCH prefer east west connectivity. I would not us and do not support elm amino bike lanes.”
“Ravenswood is the wrong street, too busy with cars, there are better alternatives.”
“I would be more likely to use a buffered lane than to ride on El Camino as is, but I would have no faith that drivers would respect the lanes. In addition, there are numerous places that cars enter and exit El Camino (driveways, etc.) and numerous places where cars are turning right – they would be turning into the bike lane.”
“Support, but would lead to more car traffic congestion. How about an over-bridge?”
“I would still be concerned about the Ravenswood/El Camino intersection. What about an alternative street where the El Camino intersection is less problematic? What about a bikeway that parallels the train tracks along Alma? Use Oak Grove instead of Ravenswood?”
“Will give me better access to downtown. Will spend more time an money there.”
“I like the new bike lanes on Ravenswood. I use them every day and see lots of kids biking to school as well. It seems safe, except for the section near the railway tracks.”
“I’d rather ride on side streets and cross el camino where it’s safe to do so. A bike tunnel or bike bridge is necessary at Middle Ave or Menlo Ave.”
“A bike lane to nowhere.. terrible idea.”
“Ravenswood has NO ROOM for safe bike lanes.”
“Bike lanes don’t need to be buffered, but taking parking off of Menlo Ave allowing for bikes to have safe space (or on Santa Cruz) would be REALLY IMPORTANT.”
“Given the congestion on Ravenswood, I would not use that road for the buffered bike lane.”
“There is plenty of parking downtown, removing street parking on either SC or Menlo would help a lot , particularly for kids riding to and from school.”
“This plan would be more beneficial than lanes on El Camino, especially for children commuting to work as well as traditional commuter linking up with Caltrains and Trader Joes.”
“I have my doubts that a buffered lane would make Ravenswood as good and safe a place to cross.”
“Ravenswood is a mess without bike lanes – a bike safe way across El Camino would be great – perhaps Oak Grove would be a better option.”
“I need this to get to Trader Joe’s in MP — and other places I shop. Why don’t merchants get on board with this? I would LOVE this!”
“Not sure how this will impact parking on Santa Cruz and businesses already have problems with getting customers to come to MP.”
“I don’t need a buffered lane to cross El Camino. Stop lights and walkways are sufficient.”
“Menlo is already too narrow between El Camino and Chestnut. It’s so narrow that traffic crossing El Camino backs up and slows down. Narrowing it further would negatively impact the El Camino / Menlo intersection.”
“Buffered bike lanes will make me LESS likely to cross El Camino, not more.”
“Buffered bike lanes would be extremely beneficial.”
“Few good routes to get across the tracks currently.”
“These roadways, especially Menlo Ave. and Santa Cruz have way too much traffic already.”
“Seems worth trying as this would allow connecting to other, safer, north/south routes and support riding in town.”
“Not really needed, traffic is much slower on these streets, and the new (red lined) area is full of stop signs so any normal cyclist would avoid them. Much faster to take Valparaiso to El Camino.”
“Now that’s a good idea. It can be tough to get to downtown if you leave east of El Camino.”
“The main danger for bicyclists is where cars turn onto and off the road, and the bike lane does nothing to help this be safer.”
“The cars are traveling at a safer speed and more appear to be respectful of bicyclists.”
“No space for buffered zone on Menlo or Ravenswood. (This is) an unrealistic proposal.”
“Menlo Park definitely needs better E/W bike connectivity. The (existing) Ravenswood/El Camino/RR area is terrible.”
“I think this is a terrific idea that would make cycling in Menlo Park safer and would also encourage people to cycle instead of drive their cars.
